In einem seiner ungewöhnlichsten Fälle versucht Columbo den Inhaber eines Herrenmagazins des Mordes zu überführen, nur um festzustellen,dass das Opfer die Geschäftspartnerin und ehemalige Geliebte des Verdächtigen so tot gar nicht ist. Auf Bitte von Scotland Yard soll Columbo das Verschwinden von Diane Hunter aufklären. Sie ist die Verlegerin und Mehrheitseignerin eines Herrenmagazins, das der britische Tycoon Sir Harry Matthews aufkaufen wollte. Sir Harry ist überzeugt, dass Sean Brantley, Gründer des Magazins und Verteidiger der Männlichkeit, die Dame ermordet hat, um den Verkauf zu verhindern. Auch Columbo verdächtigt Brantley. Doch was noch fehlt, um den Fall wirklich rund zu machen, ist eine Leiche. Die taucht jedoch nicht auf, stattdessen stürzen sich die Medien auf das Ereignis. Columbo vermutet, dass Brantley zusammen mit seiner neuen Freundin Diane umgebracht hat und es so aussehen lassen will, als sei sie nach Europa geflogen. Dies entkräftet Brantley mit einer Postkarte von Diane, die gerade erst abgeschickt wurde. Aber die Handschrift scheint nicht die der Verschwundenen zu sein. Was hat Staranwalt Finch mit dem Tod eines kleinen Ganoven zu tun? Oder war es tatsächlich Selbstmord? Und welche Rolle spielt der Kandidat für die Vizepräsidentschaft? Columbo untersucht den Selbstmord von Frank Staplin, ein unverbesserlicher Krimineller, der kurz vor einem Verfahren stand. Der zerknitterte Inspektor fragt sich, warum die Pistole nicht mit Blut befleckt ist. Staplins Sekretärin erklärt, dass der Tote kurz vor seinem Ableben ein Fax an seine Frau geschickt hat, die auf Hawaii Urlaub macht. Columbo findet heraus, dass Staplins letzter Anruf in die Kanzlei von Oscar Finch ging, einem einflussreichen Rechtsanwalt, dem eine Zukunft in der Politik vorausgesagt wurde. Finch ist die rechte Hand des Abgeordneten. Dieser bewirbt sich um das Amt des Vizepräsidenten. Finch selbst möchte Justizminister werden. Der Anwalt ist ziemlich geschickt und im Umgang mit der Polizei sehr versiert.
